Before Fortnite became a battle royale phenomenon, it was a co-op zombie shooter where you built forts, set traps, and fought off waves of monsters called Husks. That original game — Save the World — has been locked behind a paywall since 2017. On April 16, 2026, that finally ends.

Why This Is a Big Deal

Save the World was the original Fortnite experience back in 2017 — the game that laid the groundwork for everything that came after. Despite an early promise that it would eventually go free-to-play, the mode remained paywalled for nearly nine years through rotating add-on packs.

Now that paywall is finally gone. Epic has confirmed the mode will be free-to-play on April 16, 2026, globally — and it’s also launching on Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time, bringing the PvE experience to a completely new audience.

What Is Save the World?

In Save the World, players team up in a PvE co-operative mode to fight zombie-like creatures called Husks. You build forts, place traps, and complete missions to defend objectives while surviving waves of enemies — collecting resources to craft weapons, equipment, and ammo. Unlike Battle Royale, it’s a story-driven mode focused on hero upgrades, loot collection, and co-op strategy rather than PvP.
