Your first DMZ run will probably go badly, and that’s normal. The mode is crowded and unforgiving, and anything you carry is lost if you die before exfil. The good news is that a few smart habits turn early failures into progress.
DMZ is the extraction mode inside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. You infil into the Hajin Exclusion Zone, loot, fight AI and rival squads, and try to escape by helicopter. Here are five moves to make early.

1. Check Your DMZ Orders First
Before you deploy, open DMZ Orders at your Forward Operating Base (FOB). They’re your guiding mission directives and one of the most reliable ways to raise your DMZ level and build your stash.

Early orders are straightforward. One asks you to find a Police Station, search it and clear the soldiers inside. Another asks you to open a safe and extract ¤5,000 in cash. Completing orders means every run has a purpose, even if you don’t finish the map.
Why it matters: DMZ progression is permanent and runs from level 1 to 70. Level 5 also unlocks the Vendor, where you can buy weapons with DMZ cash.
2. Take the Free Ground Infil and Treat Runs as Scouting
At the FOB, pick a deployment type, then choose Ground infil, which is free. You lose gear when you die, so don’t risk expensive paid infils while you’re still learning.
Think of your first few deployments as short scouting trips, not full raids. Learn the terrain, spot where squads tend to land, and get comfortable with how the AI reacts to noise.
Why it matters: A cheap failure teaches you more than a lucky win.
3. Open the Tac-Map and Pick Two Exfils
Open the tac-map as soon as you land. Choose a main exfil and a backup. Reaching extraction is where many runs fall apart, so a second option saves you when a route turns hostile.
When you call an exfil, board the helicopter and stay inside until the countdown hits zero. Leaving early is a classic way to throw away a good run.
Why it matters: Extraction is the whole point. Loot you don’t carry out is loot you never had.
4. Loot Along the Way and Leave Early
Your backpack starts empty, so grab useful supplies as you move. Don’t wait for a perfect haul, though. Extracting early with good loot still counts as a success, even if you leave the map unfinished.
Avoid distant firefights, or approach them slowly. Noise draws attention from AI and other squads, and the first minute after landing is when early fights are most likely.
Why it matters: Greed kills more runs than any enemy.
5. Spread Risk Across Your Operators
Operators in DMZ are persistent, and each keeps their own backpack, loadout and traits. Players start with two Active Duty slots, and Vault Edition owners get three. Losing one operator’s gear doesn’t reset the others.
A smart split is one safe operator for missions and one risky operator for loot runs. If you die, your operator becomes Missing In Action, but a squadmate can rescue you.
Why it matters: One bad run never wipes your whole account.
Putting It Together

| 2 | Take free Ground infil | Low-risk learning |
| 3 | Mark two exfils | Safer escapes |
| 4 | Loot, then leave | Gear that stays yours |
| 5 | Rotate operators | Less risk overall |
