Every Minecraft update brings a new reason to watch your back, and this winter it’s a zombie that fights with ice. Where You’ll Meet It?

The Frostbite calls the Ice Caves home, a glittering underground biome of icicles and glowing ice crystals. You may also run into it in cold, snowy areas above ground. Strays can spawn in the same caves, so exploring there means facing more than one chilly foe at once.

Minecraft

A Zombie That Plays Two Roles

What makes the Frostbite interesting is that it isn’t just a reskinned zombie. It switches between fighting styles depending on how far away you are and whether it’s carrying Ice Balls. Up close, it swings like any other zombie, but each hit applies the Freezing effect, which slows you down and slowly wears away your health. From a distance, it throws Ice Balls that hit harder than snowballs and knock you back, and the closer you stand, the more damage they do.

It also has a few strange habits. It can walk across powder snow without sinking, it’s immune to freezing itself, and it burns in sunlight like other undead. If it spends long enough underwater, it transforms into a regular zombie, much like drowned do in reverse.

Loot Worth Fighting For

A defeated Frostbite drops Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls. Sportskeeda’s breakdown puts the chances at roughly 67% for 0 to 2 rotten flesh and 75% for 0 to 3 ice balls. Ice Balls are more than a throwaway drop. You can hurl them at enemies, and they’re an ingredient for the new potion of Freezing.

How to Beat It

Keep your distance from point-blank range, since that’s where its thrown Ice Balls hurt most. Fighting near sunlight can also help, because the Frostbite takes burn damage on the surface. Down in the caves, watch the ceiling: falling icicles deal extra damage, and they’re easy to forget about mid-fight.

Because this is still in testing, mechanics and even the mob’s name may change before the full release. Follow official Minecraft announcements and keep an eye out for updates.
