GTA 6: The Expected Age Ratings
5 GTA 6 is expected to carry an M (Mature 17+) rating from ESRB and a PEGI 18 certificate. 5 This means players should be 17 or older in North America, and 18 or older in Europe, to purchase or play the game without parental consent. 3 PlayStation has seemingly confirmed the GTA 6 age rating is M for Mature +17 in the emails they sent. 3 It still shows “Rating Pending” on Rockstar’s website.
GTA’s Rating History
2 Every mainline GTA game since Grand Theft Auto III has carried an M for Mature (17+) rating in North America. That consistency is no accident. Rockstar’s flagship series has always leaned into gritty realism, satirical humor, and controversial themes — from violent shootouts to explicit language and depictions of drug use. 2 The original GTA had no rating, while GTA II received a T for Teen rating.
The rest of the series has been rated M for Mature, except for the 2004 San Andreas game, which was briefly rated AO (Adults Only) due to the infamous “Hot Coffee” controversy. 2 Australia’s classification board already rated GTA VI as MA15+ back in April 2023, citing strong sex scenes and drug use. While regional systems differ, that rating aligns closely with the ESRB’s Mature category — a strong signal that GTA VI will continue the series’ tradition of being designed for adults.
Why Will GTA 6 Be Rated Mature?
8 For GTA 6, the primary factors in its classification include narrative themes following protagonists Lucia and Jason through a criminal underworld involving high-stakes heists and complex moral choices, intense combat scenarios and tactical gameplay, unfiltered language, and its trademark social satire parodying modern culture, social media, and celebrity life in a way intended for a mature perspective. 1 For context, Grand Theft Auto V was rated M with content descriptors covering Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. GTA 6 is expected to include all of those elements.
Platform Age Verification
5 On PlayStation, age restrictions are enforced through your PSN account’s date of birth. If your account is set up as a child account (under 18), you will be unable to purchase or access M/18-rated games without a Family Manager granting permission. Adult accounts can purchase and play GTA 6 without additional age checks. 5 Xbox enforces content ratings through your Microsoft account’s age settings and family safety features. Child accounts (under 18) are automatically restricted from M-rated content. Adult account holders can purchase GTA 6 directly. Xbox Family Safety settings allow parents to manage content access for children on the same console.
🔑 Online Age Verification
8 A major point of interest is the rumor of enhanced age verification systems for the online component. Reports suggest that Rockstar Games may implement stricter digital identity checks for GTA Online.
💰 Pricing & Release Details
1 Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 will cost $79.99 at launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S — a $10 jump from the $70 standard price that has been the norm this generation. A GTA 6 Ultimate Edition is priced at $99.99 and includes additional content and preorder bonuses. 1 One thing worth noting: physical copies of GTA 6 do not include a disc — they’re a download code in a box.
👨👩👧 Is GTA 6 Appropriate for Kids?
6 Grand Theft Auto is rated M for Mature (17+) for a reason. The game includes realistic violence, criminal behavior, explicit language, sexual content, substance use, and open-world situations that kids and younger teens are not developmentally ready to process. Even if a child thinks it “looks cool” or “just wants to drive the cars,” the rest of the game is filled with adult themes that kids aren’t equipped to handle. 6 GTA Online is one of the biggest safety risks for kids. The online world is unmoderated and includes voice chat and text chat with strangers from all over the world.
