The Crucible of the Unbroken is a series of solo roguelike combat challenges available for Beastmasters, themed after a tabletop game. 1 It was designed by Masaki Nakagawa (“Mr. Ozma”), FFXIV’s lead combat designer, and is described as “a completely new type of duty, unlike anything else in FFXIV so far.” 3 This content is essentially Beastmaster’s version of The Masked Carnivale for Blue Mage, although it is structured differently.

🗺️ How Does It Work? — Board Game Structure

8 The Crucible of the Unbroken is a single-player duty introduced through a level 30 Beastmaster job quest. Instead of a conventional dungeon, the Crucible uses a board game-like map with different routes, battles, and resource spaces. 8 Players can prepare approximately 10 to 15 beasts for a Crucible run. Before an individual enemy encounter, three familiars are selected from that larger roster. 1 Elemental attacks and physical damage types are strategically relevant, making your choice of beast important for each challenge.

Combat — Challenge & Snarl System

3 The player has access to two duty actions that determine whether they or their current beast has enmity on enemies — Challenge: The Beastmaster obtains top enmity. Snarl: The beast obtains top enmity and takes all damage intended for the Beastmaster.

💡 Pro Tip: Use Snarl strategically to tank heavy boss hits with your beast while you reposition — it’s the most important survival tool in the entire Crucible!

🔄 Instinctual Combo System

2 If the second instinctual skill performed runs clockwise on the Inner Compass, an intentional combo will be completed. Examples of intentional combo affinities are: Volant → Rampant, Rampant → Durant, Durant → Eldritch, Eldritch → Volant. 2 Upon completion of these combos, the corresponding side of the Inner Compass will light up. Illuminating the entire Compass may trigger an incredibly powerful attack.

🌟 Beast Rank System — Level Your Familiars

2 All familiars that accompany you inside the Crucible will receive experience points proportionate to your score. For every 100 EXP earned, beast rank will increase, thereby enhancing the familiar’s attributes within the Crucible. By returning to challenge boards, you may increase your familiars’ beast rank up to a maximum of 25.

🏆 Difficulties & Rewards — Full Breakdown

3 Initially unlocked at level 30, there are four difficulties available — a story mode and three challenge-mode difficulties — and leaderboards for the highest scores. 3 The highest difficulty (Third Degree) contains a seasonal leaderboard where the top 300 players per region will earn rewards, such as an exclusive rainbow golem mount. The first ranking period will begin two weeks after the release of Patch 7.56 and last until the release of Patch 7.58.

💰 Rewards — What You Can Earn

2 By challenging boards within the Crucible of the Unbroken, players may receive faded or bright remnants of resilience proportionate to their score. Players may trade these items with the Kornago merchant in the Central Shroud (X:21.9 Y:22.6) to receive Kornago gourds or enhance Beastmaster-specific gear. 5 Using a gourd forges the pact outright, with no capture attempt and no group required — the practical route for anything gated behind high-level content.

💡 Essential Beginner Tips

6 An auto-recommend roster exists for players who do not want to theorycraft every node. Yoshida nudged newcomers to use it early, then tweak. 2 You may save your data and temporarily withdraw from the Crucible while in between spaces or on spaces you have already cleared.

⚠️ New Player Warning: 5Several of the later job quests require clearing a Crucible of the Unbroken board before they will advance — so the questline and the Crucible are meant to be run together.
