The Three Classes Confirmed So Far

Demon Hunter

A fan favorite returning from Diablo 3, the Demon Hunter wields twin crossbows and blends ranged and melee combat with fast, evasive movement. According to Sportskeeda’s breakdown, the class strikes from the shadows and leaps across the battlefield — a natural pick for a game where players are actively hunting the demonic forces that have overrun the world.

Diablo 5

Monk

Also making a comeback from Diablo 3, the Monk focuses on martial arts and close-quarters combat, using fists and holy power to smite enemies. Part of the Monk’s identity had previously been folded into Diablo 4’s Spiritborn class, so its full standalone return marks a notable shift back to a classic Diablo archetype.

Plague Knight

The real headline here. Plague Knight is a brand-new class with no prior appearance in the series — described by Game Director Joe Shely as a heavily armored “embodiment of walking death.” The class roams the battlefield spreading disease and pestilence, then consumes that same plague to power itself up, giving it a genuinely fresh identity compared to anything Diablo has offered before.

Why the Story Setup Matters

Diablo 5 isn’t picking up where things left off in a hopeful place. As confirmed at the panel, Sanctuary has already fallen — Diablo has won, and survivors are little more than playthings in his ongoing conflict. Players take on the role of the Heir to Westmarch, a character with a mysterious personal connection to Diablo that becomes central to the story. That connection cuts both ways: it makes the Heir uniquely capable of threatening Diablo, but also uniquely vulnerable to his influence.

More Classes Are Coming

Blizzard was explicit that these three are just the beginning. Shely stated that Diablo 5 will “launch with more classes than ever before” — not just more than any single prior Diablo game at launch, but more classes overall than the franchise has ever offered. With a 2029 release still years away, expect a steady drip of further class reveals as development progresses.
