Grand Theft Auto is one of the best-selling franchises in history — but does commercial dominance translate into critical glory? The answer is complicated, fascinating, and honestly a little surprising. From GTA III’s genre-defining debut to GTA V selling over 200 million copies, Rockstar’s trophy cabinet tells a story that no other studio can quite match. Here’s the full breakdown.

The Biggest Winners in the Franchise
🥇 GTA IV — The Critical Peak (8 Major GOTY Wins)
GTA IV remains the franchise’s most critically decorated entry for overall GOTY. Its gritty immigrant story through Niko Bellic’s eyes earned it a 98 Metacritic score on both PS3 and Xbox 360 — one of the highest-rated games ever made. It swept the Game of the Year category at Spike VGAs alongside wins from GameTrailers, Giant Bomb, and The London Times.
🥈 GTA III — The Genre Creator (5 GOTY Wins)
Without GTA III, open-world gaming as we know it simply doesn’t exist. Its 2001 release redefined what games could be, earning five GOTY wins including the coveted Golden Joystick — a recognition that still echoes through every open-world game released since.
🏆 GTA V — The Commercial Giant (163 Total Awards)
Here’s the twist: GTA V is the 9th most awarded game of all time with 163 total awards — but only won around 2 major overall GOTY titles. Why? Critics reward innovation; GTA V perfected a formula rather than reinventing it. It did win the BAFTA Games Award for Best Game among others, and GTA has won more BAFTAs than any other gaming series in history.
What About The Game Awards (TGA)?
No GTA title has ever won GOTY at The Game Awards — the industry’s most-watched ceremony. GTA VI was nominated for Most Anticipated Game at TGA 2024, and won. All eyes are now on whether GTA VI can finally claim that elusive crown when it releases.
