GTA 6 Is Closing In on Cyberpunk 2077’s Pre-Order Crown: How Close Is the Record?

GTA

A record that has stood since 2020 may be about to fall. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI is racing toward the title of most pre-ordered video game ever, and it is doing so on consoles alone. With launch just two weeks away, fans and analysts are watching the numbers climb day by day. Here is what is known, and what is still only an estimate.

The Record Holder: Cyberpunk 2077

In December 2020, CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077 had passed 8 million pre-orders across console and PC. That figure is the benchmark GTA 6 is chasing. The two games were often compared as rival open-world blockbusters, so the head-to-head feels fitting.

Where GTA 6 Stands Now

Sensor Tower estimates GTA 6 has 7.71 million digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, worth about $751 million. That leaves it roughly 290,000 short of the record. About two weeks earlier, the same estimate was around 6.45 million, so the pace is strong. Grand Theft Auto VI has no PC version at launch, which makes the number even more eye-catching.

Why the Estimate Needs a Grain of Salt

The 7.71 million figure is unofficial and excludes physical pre-orders, so the true total could be higher. Other trackers have posted much bigger numbers, and some rumors have gone wilder still. Rockstar has not confirmed any pre-order totals. It is also worth remembering that different lists measure “pre-orders” in different ways, so comparisons are not always like for like.

What the Wider Data Suggests

Market firm Circana reports a 29% purchase intent among US console and PC gamers, the highest it has measured for any game. That measures plans to buy, not completed orders, but it shows the enormous appetite. With roughly two weeks of pre-order time left, many fans expect the 8 million mark to fall soon.

Before You Play: Preload Details

Digital buyers can start downloading on November 10, and the file size is reported at up to 212GB. Clear enough space on your console now so you are ready the moment the game goes live. Pre-order prices were reported at around $80 for the standard edition and $100 for the Ultimate edition.

What Happens Next?

If GTA 6 passes 8 million, it would take a record held for years. Still, a pre-order milestone is only the opening act. What matters most is how the game performs once players are actually in Vice City.
