DMZ is back, and this time it looks a lot more like a complete extraction shooter. Infinity Ward has pulled back the curtain on the mode, and the details are worth a read before you drop in.

Modern Warfare 4: Basics

DMZ launches alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, as a persistent PvPvE experience. You enter Hajin, a South Korean exclusion zone, solo or with a squad, loot gear, complete objectives, fight AI forces and rival Operators, then try to extract with everything you’ve collected. It takes place after the events of the campaign.

Your Home Base: The FOB

The Forward Operating Base is your command center. It starts as a modest foothold and grows into a base with more than a dozen stations as you complete operations. Extracted loot goes into your Stash, then feeds your progress:

  • 3D Printer: turn materials into backpacks, tactical gear and field upgrades.
  • Gunsmith: buy attachments with DMZ Cash, or build new weapons using a Weapon Manual.
  • Vendor: spend DMZ Cash on weapons and gear.
  • DMZ Orders: missions that teach systems, advance the story and reward progress.

The idea is that your loot matters even after the raid. If you’re short on upgrade resources, you’ve got a clear goal for your next deployment.

Progression to Level 70

DMZ has its own track from Level 1 to 70, powered by looting, combat and objectives. Each deployment is graded from F to S++, and that performance converts into XP. Tougher enemies, such as Commanders, can drop valuable printer materials, XP and cash.

A More Alive Hajin

Infinity Ward says enemy AI is much improved. Squads coordinate, convoys roll through, choppers patrol, and a threat system escalates the response as you draw attention. Rival Operators add the PvP edge, with a Bounty system that makes every fight a risk-versus-reward call.

Vehicles range from civilian cars to boats and helicopters, but unlike Warzone, they need fuel and repairs, so gas stations become key stops.

More Forgiving, Still Tense

The developers say they want to preserve the high-stakes feel of extraction shooters while being a bit more forgiving and easier to learn than the genre’s hardcore entries. That’s good news if you’ve avoided the genre because of its steep learning curve.
